Thunder Opal is a rare lapidary trade name for a quartz-rich brecciated jasper featuring natural druzy quartz crystal growth within healed fracture zones. Despite its name, it contains no opal; instead, it is composed of jasper, chalcedony, and crystalline quartz, giving it a hardness of approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and excellent durability for jewelry. The angular jasper plates, mineral-filled seams, and sparkling quartz pockets reflect a multi-stage geological formation shaped by pressure and movement.
